Naturopathic Medicine ADHD & Mental Health

Back to all services

How Dr. Carolyn Mercer, ND can help with Mental Health?

A naturopath looking at mild mental health concerns/ADHD can take a look at the overall nutrition and lifestyle of the individual and how is the individual’s core habits such as eating, drinking water, exercise and sleep are affecting their current lifestyle.

At a deeper level they can examine if there are any hormonal imbalances contributing to the health condition, if there are any biochemical or nutritional imbalances or deficiencies, or if any digestive concerns are contributing to mental health concerns.  A naturopath can also do detailed testing to look at these imbalances.

A naturopath can also examine the emotional pattern and history underlying the person’s condition and can also suggest gentle healing supports such as Bach Flower remedies or homeopathy.

How Can We HELP ADD, ADHD & Autism?

ADD, ADHD & Autism Naturally

Individuals with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) suffer from periods of inattention and impulsiveness and struggle to remain focused on the task at hand.  Conventional treatments include prescription stimulants and amphetamines such as Ritaline and Dexedrine which have many side effects.

Food sensitivity testing is one of the first line treatments for treatment of ADHD/autism.  Many people with ADHD/Autism have sensitivities to certain foods. Generally individuals with food intolerances cannot break down foods properly which creates what are called “excitotoxins” in the body.   These “excitotoxins” cross into the brain causing the brain to always be excited. Common foods that affect individuals include ingredients such as gluten, casein, soy, corn and sugar.  Also, it is important to assess if there is any (dysbiosis) imbalance of bacteria in the digestive tract that could be contributing to the condition and treat accordingly.  Microbial or ganic acid testing is available to test levels of dysbiosis in the gut.

Oftentimes individuals with ADHD/autism also have deficiencies in certain neurotransmitter such as dopamine, norepinephrine, Gaba and tryptophan.  Testing can allow us to identify these imbalances and  recommend supplements to help balance the brain chemistry and optimize focus and attention.

What does Naturopathy Treat?

Naturopaths are trained in seven modes of treatment including…

  •  Clinical Nutrition, which focuses on the fuel you are putting into your body and how nutrition is affecting your energy.
  • Botanical Medicine, which is based on the use of plants or plant extracts that may be eaten or applied to the skin. Since ancient times, herbal medicine has been used by many different cultures throughout the world to treat illness and to assist bodily functions.
  • Chinese Medicine including the use of herbs, massage, acupuncture and acupressure methodologies.
  • Homeopathic Medicine  Homeopathic medicine is based on the principle of ‘like cures like’.  In other words, a substance taken in small amounts will cure the same symptoms it causes if it were taken in large amounts.
  • Physical Medicine  Physical medicine focuses on treating muscle and joint strains, arthritis and other types of pain.  Treatments offered may include naturopathic bodywork, stretching exercises, acupuncture and acupuncture.
  • Lifestyle Counselling  Emotions and mental attitudes affect overall health.  Lifestyle counselling along with naturopathic interventions can provide support for those with mental health concerns.  Counselling could also involve giving advice regarding exercise, sleep and nutrition.

Our thoughts and emotions can have a huge impact on the manifestation of our physical symptoms.
